GAITHERSBURG BOOK FESTIVAL

On Saturday, May 21, District Writers’ Academy is excited to participate, for the first time, in the Gaithersburg Book Festival, a long-standing and beloved tradition for lovers of books and writing in the DMV area. Founded in 2010, The Gaithersburg Book Festival has been on hiatus for the past two years due to the Covid pandemic, but it returns on Saturday with a full day of activities for writers, writer-wannabes and lovers of the written word. Please come welcome it back!

At the festival, District Writers’ Academy will be offering a free workshop, Brainstorm Your College Essay Topic, for high school students. The workshop will introduce students to models of the common application essay, give them a chance to experiment with several potential topics and provide them with a takeaway packet full of our own home-grown tips and resources for writing the essay. The workshop will take place from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. and again—it’s FREE!  We all know starting is the hardest part, so that’s what this workshop is designed to do—break the ice. We’d be thrilled to see your teen there!  Please note: Participation is capped at 20 students, and admittance is on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure you get there in time.

Beyond our workshop, the 2022 Gaithersburg Book Festival offers a robust and diverse program of activities. With a full slate of free writing workshops for adults AND children, it’s a great way to try out something new as a writer, or introduce your young one to the possibilities of writing.  There are also author talks running all day by some of DMV’s amazing talent, and a children’s village with exhibits and books for young readers and writers.

Oh, and parking and admission are free—What’s not to love!
