Learn how to navigate the writing process efficiently and effectively!
Start the academic year strong with this one-week workshop that teaches students the basic skills for academic writing, from the writing process (pre-writing, brainstorming, thesis formation, revision), to specific skills for organization, specificity, paragraph development, research and transitions. Taught in a small-group, interactive, workshop-style setting, this course creates a fun and safe space for students to learn and practice specific skills and is designed to accommodate individual teens and their unique learning styles. Students will receive hands-on attention and plenty of constructive feedback.
This course will
- Teach academic writing skills in a hands-on, supportive environment
- Break down components of good essay writing using visual tools, models and interactive exercises
- Give students plenty of time to write, rewrite and practice
- Build confidence and demystify the writing process, so students can see how good writing actually happens (i.e. not by a sudden bolt of inspiration)
- Provide practical strategies to overcome common writing blocks, such as perfectionism, lack of ideas, overwhelm with too many ideas, etc.
- Provide copious but ungraded feedback to build on students’ strengths
- Train students to become astute editors of their own work.
- Provide a handbook with models, tips and reference tools that students can keep as a writing resource
